Core gameplay

How the Hamburger Hill game plays: plan, equip, fight

  • Plan

Choose the attack on the campaign map, take territory, and get ready for the counterattack.

  • Equip

Kit soldiers before the battle. The public page lists selective-fire rifles, machine guns, rockets, and sidearms.

  • Fight

You play each battle yourself. Keeping the squad alive matters as much as clearing the ground.

  • Quick Play

Set terrain, weather and opposing forces. The official page advertises 64-player battles with up to three factions; in this single-player game the other soldiers are AI.

“Have you ever been inside a hamburger machine? We just got cut to pieces by extremely accurate machinegun fire.”

What is the Hamburger Hill game?

Hamburger Hill is a single-player military first-person shooter made by the independent developer Wesware. It is published on itch.io for Windows and macOS, and it is still in development: new versions have been arriving every few days, each with its own devlog post. The itch.io page lists it as name-your-own-price and files it under Shooter, Action and Strategy.

The idea fits in three words from the official page: plan, equip, fight. You plan your campaign on a map, equip your soldiers, then fight each battle yourself in first person. Between battles you take territory, hold off counterattacks and try to keep your men alive. The game is set in Granovia, a fictional country of jungles, rice paddies and city streets.

This fan site collects what is publicly known about the Hamburger Hill game: where to download it, how the campaign works, the weapons and sides listed by the developer, and answers to the questions players ask most. Every fact links back to Wesware's own pages.

How the campaign works

The campaign is the heart of the game. Since update 0.4.0 you keep a 12-man squad between battles and make one assault per turn. When soldiers are lost, recruits fill the empty slots, and an AUTO option recruits replacements for you. You can click a soldier to see his kit or send him back to the army.

Besides the main assaults there are bonus missions, such as patrols, convoys and rescues, each with its own weather and time of day. Patrols take you through searchable villages and abandoned outposts, with ambushes on the way. Rescue missions ask you to fire a flare to call a helicopter extraction, then defend the aircrew against enemy waves. What happens in villages has consequences: civilian incidents affect your campaign support and show up in the newspaper reports you can reopen from the NEWS button.

Update 0.7.0 redesigned the campaign sidebar and added attack previews, new province artwork and reworked city streets.

Your squad, its roles and its weapons

Your soldiers are not interchangeable. Radio operators use binoculars to call artillery, napalm and illumination, with markers that show where strikes will land. Medics treat the wounded. Engineers carry one kit for demolition and bridge repairs, and they blow up enemy outposts once the squad has cleared them. A flamethrower soldier with the M83 Torch joined in update 0.4.0.

The official page lists four weapons for each side. Your squad carries the M16 selective-fire assault rifle, the belt-fed M60, the disposable M66 Tube rocket launcher and the M27 Brick sidearm. The enemy holding the capital uses Zippy rifles, a squad machine gun and HESH Tube rockets, and the mountain fighters close in with the Long Rifle, Trail Gun, M18 Broom shotgun and Trail Knife.

Quick Play: build your own battle

If you only want one fight, Quick Play lets you build a battle with your choice of terrain, weather and opposing forces. The store page advertises massive 64-player battles with up to three factions. The game is single-player, so the other soldiers are AI. Update 0.2.0 reworked Quick Play with preset cards and more battle settings, and 0.3.0 added a Night Assault Boats mission to both Quick Play and the campaign.

Is the Hamburger Hill game free? Platforms and versions

You can download Hamburger Hill from Wesware's itch.io page, where it is name-your-own-price. On 30 October 2026 the files were Windows 0.7.0 and macOS 0.4.0, so the Mac build is a few updates behind. There is no browser version and no mobile version. Wesware has said in the comments that version 1 will be on Steam, that controller support is being worked on, and that multiplayer is a long-term goal rather than a current mode.

Some players see a Windows SmartScreen "unknown publisher" warning because the build is not code-signed. Only download the game from the official itch.io page.

Where the name comes from

The store page opens with a quote from a sergeant dated May 1969, the month of the real battle for Hill 937 in Vietnam that soldiers called Hamburger Hill. The game itself is not a re-creation of that battle. Wesware has said the war and the country are intentionally fictional and only loosely resemble the Vietnam War. Our blog has short pieces on the real battle and on the game behind the name.
